All that said, Asheville is not paradise on earth. As a friend who lived on a gorgeous beach in Mexico once remarked, “You can’t live in paradise, you can only visit there.” In other words, if you stay long enough to deal with the practicalities of everyday living, even Shangri-la has its warts. Asheville, like any place, has its share of drawbacks; be they escalating prices, employment issues, political squabbles, drugs, crime, etc. If you want to find the grit and the grisly, the people, politics and issues that have locals riled, educate your newcomer self by reading the local papers. The more realistic your expectations are, the happier you’ll be as you evolve from Asheville newcomer to Asheville old timer.
